On October 24th, Saucy took to the fields of Ames to Please, fired up and only a little sleepy. The wind was blowing at precisely 1738 mph and for our first game we fought hard against one of the Tsunami split teams, but they broke us on the upwind and we couldn’t get it back. The final score was 05-07. Our second game was against Kansas State Wildcats. Bucket, Hanky, and Twilight (our coaches), pushed us to improve on our mistakes and be smart in the wind, and we came out roaring with an 08-01 victory. Our O line stepped it up to get all of those upwind breaks, and our D line did a fantastic job of stopping their downfield hucks and scoring it back. Our third game was against the Iowa State Alums and we knew that this would be a tough team. Liz emphasized that this game would be a great opportunity to learn and push ourselves to be better players. Even though we were only able to score once with our kill line, everyone played their hardest. I’m proud of how this team is able to look past winning and losing to focus on personal development. After an intense game that ended in an alumni win at 01-10, the Iowa State Alumni sang us an awesome song that they wrote about us and gave out spirit awards to Tricia for her killer rookie handling and Havel for her sideline presence. They both got to pick a jersey donated by the alumni as their reward for being spirited players. Congrats to both! After a shenanigan-filled goodbye, our last game on Saturday was against the other Tsunami split team. Tsunami got an upwind break near the beginning to make it 1-3, but Saucy soon got an upwind break as well to tie it at 3s. From there, the teams traded back an fourth until universe when Beth tossed a short backhand to Brooke for the game winning point at 06-05. On Sunday our first game was against the Cuddle Raptors and we mostly traded points for the game. One of our rookies, Heather, had a great catch in the endzone, but the Cuddles ended up clenching the win at 06-08. Our next game was against Wisconsin Whitewater and we came out hot! Nicole threw to Nicole for a twin point and Alexis, a rookie, laid out for the first time! Then she laid out again! We won 11-04. Next up we played the Grinnell College Sticky Tongue Frogs and had a great game. We ran the Iowa zone successfully on a D point to get an easy score, and on another point, Drin scored! We put seven rookies on the line for the last point and ended up with an 11-06 win. After Liz trolled the team with “Goofy string,” we were up for our last game of the weekend against WUWU. The game was as intense as it was fun. They took half at 5-7, but we tied it back up at 7s. WUWU pulled ahead again at 7-9, and then we scored on O, making it 8-9. Bucket, using his handy clipboard, called out a kill line to get the D and score it, which it was exactly what they did. Then it was 9s. Same line. Universe point. The air was electric. Liz’s husky puppy Lola was sleeping intensely under a chair. That’s how intense it was. The point was tough-fought on both sides, but we got the D and scored for a final of 10-9! Both teams did awesome! Overall Saucy took 9th in the tournament. We did a great job of playing hard and learning from our mistakes as we move along in the fall season. Each time they were on the field, rookies stepped up to make big plays and continued to improve exponentially. Shout out to the Saucies for working hard and having a spirited, fun-filled weekend, along with everyone who came out to support us! Now on to MLC!

midwest throwdown 2015We started our first tournament of the season March at Midwest Throwdown in St. Louis, Missouri over the weekend of March 7th and 8th, finishing the tournament with an overall 9th place out of an approximation of 30 teams. Here's how we did against the teams we played at Midwest Throwdown: 10 - 11 Kansas Betty 05 - 15 Notre Dame Womb 10 - 08 Minnesota Ninjas 06 - 15 Nebraska Cuddle Raptors 15 - 07 Northern Iowa Monium 15 - 09 Washington WUWU women's college centex 2015Two weeks after Midwest Throwdown, we set ourselves to travel a little further down south. Joined by our male counterparts, IHUC, our team spent the weekdays of our spring break at Galveston, Texas before we headed up to Austin, Texas for Centex. In Austin the team powered through heavy rain and muddy field situations. Huge layouts and occasional slips helped some of our girls collect battle scars on their jerseys as we seeded 23rd out of 41 amazing teams who traveled to Texas from all over the country. Here's how we did against the teams we played at Centex: 09 - 11 Colorado College Lysistrata's Tools 07 - 09 Harvard Quasar 15 - 07 Northwestern GungHo 08 - 10 Michigan Flywheel 06 - 10 California-San Diego Psychos FF - FF Nebraska Cuddle Raptors old capitol open 2015About five weeks after we got home from the 16 hours drive from Texas, we signed ourselves up for a tournament closer to home. We traveled to Cedar Rapids, Iowa to attend Old Capitol Open, hosted by our very own, IHUC. Here, our ladies persevered windy midwestern weather conditions and pushed ourselves throughout the March 28th and 29th weekend, ranking 5th amongst 16 teams. We were able to push our way through our competitions into the semi finals, unfortunately losing our game to the Cyclones, who went on to win the tournament. Here's a summarized recap of our first sanctioned tournament of the season -
Pool A - Kansas, Notre Dame, us, and Minnesota Saturday -- was a weird day for our pool. Whatever the end results were, however, we ended the day knowing that we had played fun and confident ultimate. Our first game was against Kansas Betty's. We started out on a 5 point run as the team was fired up on the field and on the sidelines. Betty started to fight back, but we took half at 8-5. The game ended on universe with Betty pulling through for a final of 10-11. Our second game was against Notre Dame Wombs. We had played them in the fall and knew they were going to make us work hard. They scored 5 points to start until we finally scored. Even though the results don't show it, there were lots of Ds and long hardworked points. The sidelines were able to keep our players on the field going even when it seemed impossible to take another breath. There were Ds not only from known vets, but also from our rookies!, most notably a large handblock from #9 Jess and #42 Ray Lay. The game ended 5-15, but according to Coach Brooks, we were "having fun, working hard, decisive, and confident." The last game of the day was against our regional pals University of Minnesota Ninjas. Things that came out of this game: long points, many turns, falls from both sides from the annoying mud, and many, many layout Ds from #33 Anna. The turns led to hard cap going off and ending the game at 10-8 with other great Ds from #55 Liz and #2 Rachel. We ended the day 1-2, putting us at 2nd in our pool. Sunday -- Prequarters against Nebraska Cuddle Raptors consisted of lots of sideline intensity as Cuddle went up 4 points. We caught up with focus and teamwork at 5s, but they pulled away to take half 6-8. Unfortunately, we couldn't pull through and the game ended 6-15. Our second game was against UNI Monium. Due to confusion, they didn't show up until 20 minutes into the round which led to 2 assessed points, starting the game at 2-0. Half was taken at 8-2 and the game ended 15-7. The last game of the day and the tournament was against WUWU. They did not let us let up for the last one of the day as it was a very intense game. Half was 8-5. Cool things happened like a high release backhand from #84 Havel to #55 Liz in the endzone and numerous #2 Rachel Ds. The game ended 15-9 with a cute spirit circle with WashU. 2-1 for the day putting us at 9th place overall out of almost 30 teams. Not bad for a team that hasn't been outside in almost 4 months! We have a lot of updates coming like rookie rosters and Sponsor a Saucy so stand by. This is also a huge weekend for us. It's our first tournament of the season and it's right here in Iowa City. We'll be hosting some great teams including Drake, Wisconsin, Iowa State, Grinnell, Minnesota, Luther, and UNI! Location: Hawkeye Tennis and Recreation Complex Time: Day 1: 9pm-midnight // Day 2: 7:30-noon Here's a pic of the tournament sched -- Spring season is upon us! With the new year having arrived, we're digging ourselves either out (from not doing winter workouts) or pushing ourselves forward (from actually doing winter workouts). It's the weird time of indoor tournaments and then the quick transition to colder than fall tournaments. Whichever it is, it's time to kick it into gear, step up, and play some great ultimate. It's been a while since we've last posted, so let's recap our fall season.
We made appearances at three tournaments - Elephantitis in Grinnell, IA; No Wisconsequences in Milwaukee, WI, and ended our fall season at Missouri Loves Company in Columbia, MO. You can check our detailed tournament recap underneath Team Info, but we finished overall with 17 wins and 4 losses. A lot can happen for many teams over winter break and we're really excited to see what kind of teams our players will be putting together this spring 2015 season! Tentatively, our spring tournament schedule is nice and packed - just the way we like it! Plans for our bubble/barn tournament in late February are still underway so be on the lookout for that! Come March, we will be attending Midwest Throwdown in St. Louis, MO and heading down to Austin, Texas for our favorite spring break getaway, Centex! Before the series rolls along, we'll finish the regular season with Old Capitol Open in Cedar Rapids, IA hosted by our very own men's team IHUC - you should check it out here. Until all this tournament stuff, we're excited to be back at practice, with eachother, and most especially, you! One month later and here we are at our second tournament recap of the season. If you thought Grinnell was too great for words to express, then I don't know what this is. No Wisconsequences is one to remember as Saucy Nancy took 1st place going undefeated for the weekend! (7-0, also after being seeded last in our pool) It was awesome to play more difficult teams that made us work harder to get the win. Not to mention the wind didn't make it any easier. Both days consisted of lots of zone (which we all love so that's okay). All in all, LOTS of cool things happened this weekend...check it out! Saturday - 4 games, no byes aka lots of playing and no rest. We started out against Loyola University Chicago Sirens followed by wins against Pink Mankato Skunk (p.s. ANNA CALLAHAN), Wisconsin Y, and La Crosse Galaxy. Games progressively got harder as the day went on because of the wind, but you know what else progressed? THE TEAM - every huddle increased our focus on our goals - to have fun and to deserve the win we wanted. Throughout the whole weekend, we were surprised at how our rookies stepped up and made plays that weren't expected of them. TOURNAMENT PARTYYY - all you have to know is that our two rookie foreigners from Wales and Australia won a set of LIGHT and DARK jerseys from our very own favorite sponsor, Patagonia. Such love, much happy. Sunday was a day for the sidelines as lines got tighter. There's a saying that "defense wins games." It's hard for a great defense to execute to its fullest without sideline help and that's exactly what was seen on Sunday. More and more wind, windy wind wind meant longer points, more turns, increased frustration, but we pulled through as we got wins against Northern Michigan Aurora, Valparaiso (p.s.s. ANNA CALLAHAN TWO, yes two), and a second match up against Wisconsin Y to win the tournament! Can't forget to mention the multiple layout D's we got on Sunday from our Saucies - Saucy loves layout D's. Next tournament is Missouri Loves Company in Columbus, MO the weekend of November 8-9 - colder and colder ultimate times coming, joy. WHEN: Monday, September 29, 3-7 PM We hope to see people come out and enjoy some frozen yogurt and the company of lovely Saucies! The first tournament of the fall season has come to a close. The weekend was too great for words to express, it's hard to know where to begin! It was awesome to see rookies finally get to play against different teams and enjoy the sport of ultimate. Overall, we went 3-0 on Saturday and 2-1 on Sunday, if it weren't for Saucy alums! Check out the tournament results at the bottom of the Team Info page.
Big thanks to IHUC alumni, Bryan Brooks for coming out to coach this weekend. Everyone is excited to have had him for this tournament and for the rest of the season. Gotta put in a word for our rookies. They played ultimate the way it should be played, with lots of spirit and enthusiasm. Not once during the weekend was there a need for "pick me ups" or a boost in energy because it was always there. The rookie point played on Saturday showed just that as they worked the field and scored a goal vs Grinnell. The team as a whole had fun, yet worked hard to get what we wanted. It was the best feeling to set goals and see everyone focus on readjustments made as different teams were played. We finished the weekend in 3rd place with 5 wins and 1 losses. Next tournament is No Wisconsequences, October 11-12 so best bet that we'll be practicing harder and getting better until then! P.S. Stay tuned later in the week for photo highlights from Grinnell on the Media page. Things like this happened -- |
