On October 24th, Saucy took to the fields of Ames to Please, fired up and only a little sleepy. The wind was blowing at precisely 1738 mph and for our first game we fought hard against one of the Tsunami split teams, but they broke us on the upwind and we couldn’t get it back. The final score was 05-07. Our second game was against Kansas State Wildcats. Bucket, Hanky, and Twilight (our coaches), pushed us to improve on our mistakes and be smart in the wind, and we came out roaring with an 08-01 victory. Our O line stepped it up to get all of those upwind breaks, and our D line did a fantastic job of stopping their downfield hucks and scoring it back. Our third game was against the Iowa State Alums and we knew that this would be a tough team. Liz emphasized that this game would be a great opportunity to learn and push ourselves to be better players. Even though we were only able to score once with our kill line, everyone played their hardest. I’m proud of how this team is able to look past winning and losing to focus on personal development. After an intense game that ended in an alumni win at 01-10, the Iowa State Alumni sang us an awesome song that they wrote about us and gave out spirit awards to Tricia for her killer rookie handling and Havel for her sideline presence. They both got to pick a jersey donated by the alumni as their reward for being spirited players. Congrats to both! After a shenanigan-filled goodbye, our last game on Saturday was against the other Tsunami split team. Tsunami got an upwind break near the beginning to make it 1-3, but Saucy soon got an upwind break as well to tie it at 3s. From there, the teams traded back an fourth until universe when Beth tossed a short backhand to Brooke for the game winning point at 06-05. On Sunday our first game was against the Cuddle Raptors and we mostly traded points for the game. One of our rookies, Heather, had a great catch in the endzone, but the Cuddles ended up clenching the win at 06-08. Our next game was against Wisconsin Whitewater and we came out hot! Nicole threw to Nicole for a twin point and Alexis, a rookie, laid out for the first time! Then she laid out again! We won 11-04. Next up we played the Grinnell College Sticky Tongue Frogs and had a great game. We ran the Iowa zone successfully on a D point to get an easy score, and on another point, Drin scored! We put seven rookies on the line for the last point and ended up with an 11-06 win. After Liz trolled the team with “Goofy string,” we were up for our last game of the weekend against WUWU. The game was as intense as it was fun. They took half at 5-7, but we tied it back up at 7s. WUWU pulled ahead again at 7-9, and then we scored on O, making it 8-9. Bucket, using his handy clipboard, called out a kill line to get the D and score it, which it was exactly what they did. Then it was 9s. Same line. Universe point. The air was electric. Liz’s husky puppy Lola was sleeping intensely under a chair. That’s how intense it was. The point was tough-fought on both sides, but we got the D and scored for a final of 10-9! Both teams did awesome! Overall Saucy took 9th in the tournament. We did a great job of playing hard and learning from our mistakes as we move along in the fall season. Each time they were on the field, rookies stepped up to make big plays and continued to improve exponentially. Shout out to the Saucies for working hard and having a spirited, fun-filled weekend, along with everyone who came out to support us! Now on to MLC!
